Reasons for using the Pick, Break and Drop protocol:
- It has been proven to be successful in destroying the Himalayan Balsam.
It encourages the general public to participate in the program knowing that if they see a plant, they don’t need to have a bag for disposal.
- Removing weeds from a shoreline involves significant time climbing over wet and slippery rocks. It is much safer to patrol the shoreline without carrying a heavy bag of weeds.
- Dropping the plant where it was found growing ensures that the seeds will not be spread to another location from improper handling: leave the problem where the problem exists.
- This is the only practical method of eradicating this plant where it exists over a large area. Bagging the plant requires considerably more time and resources.
